GitLab CEO Sid Sijbrandij founded Open Core Ventures (OCV) to fund outstanding open-source creators. The mission: incentivize open-source development to increase transparency in tech, fight monopolization, and speed up research and development. How, exactly? Sid captures the movement’s zeitgeist best in his article arguing that open core companies will gradually replace proprietary software ↗.
I officially partnered with OCV and worked with about a dozen of their portfolio companies to build visual identities, marketing sites, and open core software products.
Most recently, Erica Lindberg, OCV’s head of content, reached out with a challenge. OCV is far from a traditional venture capital firm, but it really looked like one. My job was to revamp their visual identity to make their brand feel as fresh as their business model.
